When I was a kid, cartoon detective Dick Tracy had a watch that did more than told them time. It was a two way transmitter of ever-increasing levels of information! Years later, I checked out the bag phone for remotes so we were not dependent on a land-line; and when I got the phone installed in my car, the relative immediacy of talking to clients while not tethered at the station was so technologically advanced!
Fast forward. The 2 ½ year old in my life grabs my phone and can find the aps she wants, deftly navigating with her swiping finger. Phone are email devices, cameras, rolodexes (a device that stored all your contacts on little paper cards, young ‘uns…), gaming devices, juke boxes (those machines with those round vinyl discs that played songs!), clocks, compasses, newspapers, weather stations, maps, dictionaries, encyclopedias…and that is just what I am thinking of off the top of my head. At an Efficio meeting I asked our IT President what is next, so my team and I can learn and be prepared. He said he didn’t know, and perhaps with the speed of technology today, it may not have been thought of yet!
So we have to focus on what we have today, while keeping an eye on tomorrow. In a software company, this can be tricky. It has turned tablets are generally not being used for phone calls, meaning people still have phones. It seems there in an optimal size….too small and we lose them in our pockets and purses, too big and we don’t want to be the person holding them up to our ears to hear. That means, that, where we are today, many of you have tablets and use them for business, but that phone is still our handy dandy do-it-all device.
